Abstract: (13 Views) |
To identify parental views on educational objectives across the SES spectrum and the extent to which such views reflect those outlined by the Ministry of Education, a specially selected group of 34 parents with assumed representation of their SES cohorts, who had first and sixth graders at home, were interviewed in a semi-structured format based on the official indices and objectives of education as described in the latest documents published by the MOE. Parents with low SES consider the emphasis on the ability to earn a living, finding good friends, personal hygiene care, and religious practices as required, while the middle group values creativity, explorative learning, increasing students’ resilience, as well as arts and calligraphy. The parents coming from the upper SES areas view financial literacy, sex education, psychological wellbeing of the students, as well as the injection of hope in their lives as the main objectives of educational system that should be pursued. The findings are indicative of some shortcomings of the officially stated objectives, and the need to consider parental views on the matter as obvious. |
