Abstract: (53 Views) |
Based on the features of the Philosophy Curriculum for Children, and given the well documented inadequacies of the Social Studies curriculum at the elementary school level, the need for development of a new model, namely social exploration, for this course was apparent. To this end, initially the basic features in Philosophy Curriculum for Children were drawn and then combined with social elements in a new fashion making them totally different from the ordinary curricular models. As for the goals, two sets of cognitive and social objectives are defined emphasizing reasoning, inquisitiveness, and wisdom. As for the socio-philosophical content, three criteria of literary, psychological, and contemplative adequacy were used. In the area of instructional methods, the emphasis is put on research community, Socratic dialogue, and participatory methods. Finally, in the area of evaluation both personal and collective performance is highlighted.
