The use of digital games in teaching math has been widely researched and its usefulness confirmed. What is absent from the literature is the way by which such games are to be incorporated in the process of teaching in order to ensure their positive impact. Given the difficulties faced by many teachers to do so, the present project was aimed at filling the gap. To this end, a 3rd grade math class was selected and the concepts of addition and subtraction were taught with the help of a digital game and through role playing. The entire process was observed and noted by the researcher while participating in it. Furthermore, the teachers were interviewed regarding their method of incorporating the game. Results show that teachers engaged in a variety of activities in order to maximize the effect of the game on students learning, including planning, providing the needed infrastructural and technical necessities, playing the role of an expert in both digital games and mathematics, being inquisitive and encouraging reflection, and tutoring every student. |
