The Effect of Jigsaw Method of Teaching on Junior High School Students’ Academic Self-Concept and Attitude towards School

Cooperative teaching/learning can have positive outcomes. To show the effects of Jigsaw method of teaching on students’ self-concept and attitude towards school, a group of 40 accessible junior high school students in Meybod was randomly divided into two groups of equal size and then given two questionnaires on the two constructs mentioned, both before and after one group’s treatment which consisted of 12 weekly sessions in which the Jigsaw method was used. Data analyses revealed that the academic self-concept of the treated group was significantly better than what it was before the treatment and that of the other group. The use of this method also affected all aspects of students’ attitudes toward school except for the goal valuing. It is, therefore, suggested that this method be used in junior high school in order to improve students’ learning, interest in school, and academic advancement. |
