Given that the field of Education is based on other areas of knowledge, such as philosophy, psychology, history, and sociology, it requires its students to have adequate knowledge on these foundational areas. To evaluate and compare this knowledge across different groups of students of Education, a group of 281 first to fourth year students was tested using a multiple choice test of 96 items on 8 identified foundational fields, and with adequate validity and reliability. The results show that the overall performance level of the participants, as well as their scores on each of the foundational areas, is lower than the mean of 10. The highest scores obtained were in economic, psychological, sociological, and historical foundations, while the lowest were in technological, philosophical, biological, and artistic areas. Furthermore, the average scores across the four years of college significantly increased. Thus it is recommended that students’ understanding of the very concept of education and its foundations be attended to by curriculum developers. |
