In today’s world the concept of literacy includes not only the basic knowledge and values of the environment, but and skills of protecting it. Environmental education, however, like any other area, requires early curricular planning. An example of such approach is evident in a learning package called “Our earth and whatever is it”. To explore its usefulness, a group of children in Alborz province was initially tested on environmental literacy and then put through the program, followed by a post test on the same subject. Data analyses revealed a noticeable improvement in children’s environmental literacy. Children learned not only the importance of environment, but ways of valuing all its living and inanimate elements, as well as ways of actively participating in its protection.
